OH! I'm on a similar path...committed to reading things I've put off. I, too, was raised by conservative Bible-believing folks. My dad was a preacher. I've had to work hard to find the "real Jesus" and not pay attention to some of the nonsense I grew up on. I personally love The New Living Translation (not the paraphrase) for just plain 'ol reading, but King James still feeds my poetic soul. Let's READ ON! And WRITE ON, and ROCK ON!
I think nothing matches the beauty found in the KJV. It’s how I remember psalms and the words in red. As for reading challenging works - I don’t know. Life is short.😆
Wow, that was inspirational writing. Dostoevsky is my favorite. I found an abridged copy of Crime and Punishment translated to Malayalam, my native language, when I was in high school. Reading it was transformational in the true sense. I got to know the taste of literature, that of ideas and ideals attached to it, that of humanity and existence by re-reading it a few more times.
I love the idea of reading this deeply. Bros K have eluded me for years as well. I sometimes joke that I have started reading it more times than most smokers quit smoking.
I have completed my reading of The Brothers K. Currently reading Shakespeare, Dumas (The Count of Monte Cristo), and the King James Bible. Update coming soon.
I hope to finish 'The Brothers Karamazov' one day. I've started multiple times, different languages and formats. I've decided to move on to 'Notes from Underground' and smaller novels by Dostoyevsky until I build enough strength, as you suggested.

That’s great — and thanks for stopping by. Keep reading!

... and death is long. :-)
But not forever. 👍🏼

It is a deep well, no doubt.

Gotta take your brags where you can get them! And good job looking at the gainm and not just at the gap. ;-)
I find reading books from deep thinkers gives my mind a chance to stretch. It is definitely better for the brain than listening to the news.
100% better, for sure!
